Learn moreHow OTC hearing aids work
Three simple steps
Since October 2022, the FDA has allowed hearing aids to be sold over the counter to adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. That means no exam or prescription is required to buy one.

Check it's a fit
OTC hearing aids are for adults 18+ who notice mild to moderate trouble hearing, like needing the TV louder or missing parts of conversations in a restaurant. See the checklist below for when to see a doctor first.

Order online
Your hearing aids come to your door with a user guide. No clinic visits, no fitting appointment.

Set up at home
Pick the ear tips that fit, adjust the volume yourself, and contact our support team if you have questions. If it's not right, use the return window.

Who OTC hearing aids are (and aren't) for
OTC hearing aids are intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. They are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss, and they are not for children.
See a doctor, preferably an ear specialist, before using a hearing aid if you have:
- A visible deformity of the ear, from birth or injury
- Fluid, pus or blood coming out of the ear in the past 6 months
- Pain or discomfort in the ear
- A history of excessive earwax, or you suspect something is in your ear canal
- Episodes of vertigo or severe dizziness
- Sudden, quickly worsening or fluctuating hearing loss in the past 6 months
- Hearing loss or ringing (tinnitus) in only one ear, or a noticeable difference between ears
Sudden hearing loss can be a medical emergency. If you notice it, contact a doctor right away. A hearing aid will not restore normal hearing or prevent hearing loss. Read the full OTC hearing aid information.

Frequently asked questions
Is HEARVELA available to buy now?
Not yet. We're finishing product testing and regulatory checks. Join the launch list and we'll email you when orders open. Joining is free and doesn't reserve or order anything.
Yes. Orders ship within the time shown on our shipping page.
Do I need a prescription or hearing test?
No. Over-the-counter hearing aids can be bought without a prescription or exam by adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. A hearing test from a professional can still be helpful, and you should see a doctor first if any item on the checklist above applies to you.
How do I know if my hearing loss is mild to moderate?
Common signs include: speech sounds muffled, you have trouble hearing in groups or noisy places, you ask people to repeat themselves, or you turn up the TV louder than others like. If you have trouble hearing loud sounds, or can't follow speech even when it's loud and close, your hearing loss may be more than moderate and an OTC hearing aid may not be enough.
Will it make my hearing normal again?
No hearing aid restores normal hearing. A hearing aid amplifies sound to help you hear better. Results vary from person to person, and it can take a few weeks to get used to wearing one.
Does insurance cover it? Can I use HSA or FSA?
We'll confirm payment options, including HSA and FSA cards, before launch. Most health insurance plans don't cover OTC hearing aids, but check with your plan.
What if it doesn't work for me?
You'll have 60 days from delivery to return it for a refund. See the returns policy for the details.
Can I buy one for a parent or partner?
Yes. The person who will wear it should be 18 or older, read the checklist above, and be comfortable setting it up, or have someone to help.
